Description:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional responsible for coordinating patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient and identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems. The RN develops and implements an individualized plan of care and evaluates the patient's response. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment.

The RN assists patients in transitioning through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act. This role applies to RNs in hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24X7 staffing.

Responsibilities include:

Using clinical reasoning to conduct accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards. Identifying and prioritizing patient and family needs. Developing, implementing, and evaluating the nursing plan of care. Modifying the plan as needed to meet clinical outcomes. Evaluating the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice through systematic reviews. Supporting evidence-based practice changes through research utilization and experiential learning. Creating a compassionate and supportive environment for patients and families.

Developing therapeutic relationships with patients and families while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Managing both emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing. Recognizing and incorporating patients' and families' unique differences into individualized plans of care. Preserving and protecting confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients. Facilitating learning for patients, families, and staff throughout the continuum of care. Collaborating with colleagues to develop and implement integrated plans of care.

Using strategies and resources for problem-solving regarding patient and staff needs. Improving nursing practice and the work environment through participation in shared governance. Demonstrating commitment to ongoing professional growth through continuing education and networking. Contributing to the professional development of peers and colleagues. Interacting with a wide range of constituencies while demonstrating effective communication skills. Recognizing changes in the medical condition of patients and communicating these changes effectively.

Providing age-specific, quality, patient-centered care and developing individualized care plans. Applying knowledge of medical terminology, nursing standards, and ethics to daily practice.
