A Merchandise Trainee plays a crucial role in supporting the merchandising team. This entry‑level position is designed to provide hands‑on experience and training in various aspects of merchandising and retail operations. The Merchandise Trainee will assist the merchandising team with daily tasks and projects, gaining exposure to product selection, planning, inventory management, market analysis, and vendor relations. This role is ideal for individuals looking to start their careers in retail merchandising and develop a strong foundation in the field.
The Merchandise Trainee will complete a comprehensive training program that will prepare the new hire to transition into a role within the merchandising team upon completion of the training program with a satisfactory performance.
- Assist in the selection and planning of merchandise assortments.
- Participate in product meetings and vendor presentations.
- Help analyze product trends and consumer preferences.
- Assist the merchandising team to maximize merchandise presentation, develop planograms, and work cross‑functionally through the implementation process.
- Support the merchandising team to ensure visual standards are met.
- Assist with advertising, pricing, and promotion strategies for a category of merchandise.
- Participate in the Ad Process – tracking and turning in process, proofing ads, and signage.
- Assist in analyzing monthly sales history, last year's ad results, and the ad matrix.
- Conduct market research to identify emerging trends and competitive landscape.
- Assist in compiling and analyzing sales data to inform merchandising decisions.
- Support the preparation of reports and presentations on market insights.
- Assist in maintaining relationships with vendors and suppliers.
- Help coordinate orders, deliveries, and returns with vendors.
- Support communications with vendors regarding product details and pricing.
- Analyze sales performance of products and provide insights to the merchandising team.
- Assist the team in identifying opportunities for product promotions and markdowns.
- Support the development and execution of merchandising strategies to maximize sales and profitability.
- Provide support to the merchandising team, including data entry, filing, and scheduling.
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of merchandising documents and reports.
- Help coordinate and organize merchandising‑related events and activities.
- Complete the training program successfully.
- Complete all program assignments, including participation in various training experiences designed to improve knowledge and skills related to the merchandise buying process, planning, and inventory.
- Gain an understanding and working knowledge of the buying process, including trend, product development, and sourcing, merchandise systems, the product life cycle, pre‑season, in‑season management, and marketing basics.
- Gain a thorough understanding of the merchandise financial process, including key KPIs used in pre‑season and in‑season planning.
- Acquire a working knowledge of merchandise costing, logistics processes, and retail negotiation skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Detail‑oriented with a strong sense of initiative.
- Ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- Passion for retail and merchandising.
- Previous internship or work experience in retail, merchandising, or a related field is a plus.
