Assistant Buyer Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Buyer is to assist the Buyer on all aspects of the job or step in as needed to help with Merchandise Coordinator/Detail Assistant duties.

  • Source and develop new jewelry products, price them, and determine assortment groups.
  • Forecast order quantities and participate in competitive shop activities.
  • Conduct weekly reporting and contribute to departmental reports.
  • Develop an understanding of the jewelry category and work closely with the Buyer on merchandising elements.
  • Identify sales trends, develop new product designs for testing, and pursue assortment opportunities.
  • Attend vendor meetings, take meeting notes, and follow up on action items.
  • Determine marketing vehicles, SKU selection, new merchandise programs, and sales trends that drive growth.
  • Be jointly accountable for category sales, inventory levels, and gross margin goals as established by Management.
  • Participate in on‑going competitive shopping from an omni‑channel perspective.
  • Set SKU details, descriptions, retail pricing, and packaging attributes; assist with assortment development.
  • Collaborate with Planners and Inventory Analysts to set program parameters such as product attributes, assortment size, inventory targets, and open‑to‑buy requirements.
  • Help develop forecasted sales quantities for marketing items and new programs with the Inventory Analyst and Buyer.
  • Communicate and manage vendor relationships concerning product quality, costs, terms, delivery dates, and merchandise returns.
  • Establish retail prices in line with margin requirements and update departmental category assortment sheets and analyses.
  • Proof all advertising materials for accuracy, including catalogs, emails, websites, customer mailings, and in‑store signage.
  • Prepare merchandise items for all marketing channels that are innovative and competitive within the marketplace.
  • Attend open-to-buy meetings and provide merchandise status updates as needed.
  • Complete Project Request Forms and develop store communications.
  • Collaborate with the Visual Merchandising team for in‑store presentations (planograms).
