Job Summary

The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of Fiber, including but not limited to installing, terminating, testing, and splicing.

Responsibilities
  • The Fiber Technician must have basic copper termination skills
  • The Fiber Technician will install a work area outlet for the floor, modular furniture, and wall (terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes correctly, adhere to IES COMMUNICATIONS labeling standards).
  • The Fiber Technician will build closets (mount and install backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic, and hardware), install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required, and complete all IDC connections (e.g. terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
  • The Fiber Technician performs testing, continuity test horizontal and riser cable, uses a volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoots opens, crosses, shorts, and transposes pairs on horizontal and riser cable, and uses a tone set.
  • The Fiber Technician installs LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi‑mode & single‑mode fiber.
  • The Fiber Technician will terminate simplex & duplex jumper cord.
  • The Fiber Technician will terminate & breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g. Corning/Commscope).
  • The Fiber Technician will terminate & breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g. 3

    DNX).
  • The Fiber Technician will terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single‑mode fiber.
  • The Fiber Technician will install fan‑out kits including buffer tube.
  • The Fiber Technician will calculate end‑to‑end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode & single‑mode fiber.
  • The Fiber Technician will fully complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time, specifically timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, Job Blog, tool transfers, and other required paperwork.
  • The Fiber Technician will complete any other duties as assigned.
Testing
  • The Fiber Technician will test using an OTDR, Fluke DTX 180.
  • The Fiber Technician troubleshoots using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end‑to‑end and network‑wide.
Splicing
  • The Fiber Technician will perform mechanical splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • The Fiber Technician will perform fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • The Fiber Technician performs building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.
Qualifications Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Must be able to move up to 75 lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights and on a ladder, and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to utilize tools, as specified above.
  • Must present a neat appearance.
  • Be on time, ready to work, everyday.
  • Display a positive work attitude.
  • Exhibit appropriate work behavior.
  • Display initiative; seek out additional work.
  • Adhere to IES safety regulations.
  • May be required to travel overnight or for extended periods of time.
Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in Fiber.
  • Industry certs preferred (Corning/FOA).
  • Data Center installation experience preferred.
  • Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat‑cure).
  • Testing & Troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems experience required (OTDR & PMLS).
  • Mechanical and Fusion splice experience preferred.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience preferred (splicing).
  • Must be able to comprehend prints and drawings.
  • Basic reading and writing skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to meet IES driving standards policy.
  • Must be able to work independently.
