General Summary
Constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter’s handtools and power tools, and conforming to local building codes. This job participates in on‑the‑job training.
Key Responsibilities- Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to the type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structures or fixtures to be fabricated.
- Select specified type of lumber or other materials.
- Prepare layout using a rule, framing square, and calipers.
- Mark cutting and assembly lines on materials using pencil, chalk, and a marking gauge.
- Shape materials to prescribed measurements using saws, chisels, and planes.
- Assemble cut and shaped materials and fasten them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Verify trueness of structure with a plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
- Erect framework for structures and lay sub‑flooring.
- Build stairs and lay out and install partitions and cabinet work.
- Cover sub‑floor with building paper to keep out moisture and lay hardwood, parquet, and wood‑strip‑block floors by nailing or cementing them to a mastic or asphalt base.
- Apply shock‑absorbing, sound‑deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware such as locks, letterdrops, and kick plates.
- Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
- Erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Work ExperienceAppropriate training and experience required.

- Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
- Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
- Plan work and select proper tools.
- Compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
- Picture solid objects from drawings or diagrams.
- Perform a variety of duties that may change often and rate information using measurable standards.
- Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders.
- Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials.
- Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, and see well (either naturally or with correction).
