Position Summary

An HVAC Technician 1 is a beginning to intermediate level trade helper who assists the experienced technician with installations. The role involves materials handling, jobsite housekeeping, tool and equipment maintenance, simple installations, and general labor. The technician is primarily responsible for performing installs, repairs, and maintenance on refrigeration, air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, hermetic compressors, light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, intake and exhaust fans, economizers, and humidifiers.

This is a safety‑sensitive position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Understands basic refrigeration cycle: identifies components, diagnoses problems, and uses manifold gauge set, pressure/temperature charts, and measuring devices for routine maintenance and troubleshooting. Performs refrigeration recovery, evacuation, and charging.
  • Understands basic electrical theory: AC/DC currents, single‑phase and three‑phase circuits, series and parallel circuits, Ohm’s Law, and can read basic wiring diagrams. Uses multimeters to read voltage, current, and resistance, and troubleshoots basic electrical circuits.
  • Understands air‑treating processes to control temperature, humidity, and distribution; can read and understand mechanical drawings.
  • Understands basic heating cycle: identifies heating system components, diagnoses problems with gas pressure testing and other devices, and applies combustion theory related to gas and oil fuels.
  • Helps secure, relocate, and organize materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintains a clean work area by disposing of scrap, excess materials, and refuse.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs the following equipment:
    • Refrigerant controls (metering devices)
    • Hermetic compressors
    • Heat pumps, split systems, packaged units, and ductless splits up to 5‑ton
    • Electric motors (1‑phase and 3‑phase)
    • Electric motor controls (contractors, starters, relays, disconnects, thermostats, etc.)
    • Light commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, and related controls (oil and gas)
    • Various types of water pumps
    • Intake and exhaust fans
    • Unit heaters (hot water, steam, and electric)
    • Economizers
  • Determines client needs professionally and effectively.
  • Represents CEC Companies with a clean and neat appearance on the job.
  • Communicates with Service Manager frequently about scheduling and work progress.
  • Participates in meetings and training as assigned.
  • Prepares written documentation to record activities and log information as required.
  • Provides assistance during emergencies to resolve immediate safety concerns.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs related duties as assigned to ensure efficient processes, project completion, and smooth department operation.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Apprentice license and EPA certification.
  • At least six (6) months of trade‑related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Basic understanding of English (reading, speaking, writing).
  • Soldering, brazing, basic heat‑load calculations, and basic heat‑loss calculations.
  • Adherence to safe work procedures per company policy.
  • Meeting deadlines and schedules with minimal errors.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record and driver’s license.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent time‑management and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to handle difficult people.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work well with other technicians and tradesmen.
Work Environment

May work inside or outside. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, rain, heat, cold, and snow. Work may require extreme heights, working in or around single and multi-story buildings, confined spaces, ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, ditches, excavations, and uneven surfaces. Requires OSHA‑approved ladders or stairs when necessary. Must wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) at all times.
