Primary

Purpose:

Oversee electrical projects in maintaining, repairing, and installing electrical systems, services, and equipment for the District. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all electrical systems and fixtures in District facilities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED required

Valid State of Texas Master Electrician License required

Documented electrical courses and theory from trade school

Bachelor Degree preferred.

Valid Texas driver's license and proof of insurability with District insurance carrier

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge and skills to qualify as an electrical journeyman in accordance with industry standards

Knowledge of electrical circuits, wiring and operating principles of motors, current electrical codes and ordinances

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and written reference material

Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills

Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate the performance of electrical staff

Ability to follow and issue written and verbal instructions

Ability to perform mathematical calculations

Ability to diagnose and resolve problems

Ability to use hand and power tools

Basic computer skills

Experience

Minimum 10 years electrical industry experience; 5 years of public education experience, preferred

Supervisory experience preferred

Supervisory experience in electrical craft in public education may be considered in lieu of degree

Responsibilities and Duties:

Maintenance and Repair

  • Coordinate the sequencing and scheduling of electrical work with other trades to ensure timely project completion within budget.
  • Review each project before determining priorities and recommend approaches to completing the project effectively and efficiently.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and written reference material outlining the scope of various projects, and transfer that understanding to staff assigned to project.
  • Conduct inspections to maintain a high degree of quality control; and set and maintain standards that meet code compliance and safety features of the District, city, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee installation of new equipment, including but not limited to conduit, plugs, electrical eyes, timers, exterior security lighting, classroom lighting, ground-fault circuits, computer outlets, exit lights, and security controls.
  • Review and conduct ongoing efforts of preventative maintenance on appliances and electrical apparatuses throughout the District, including food services.
  • Analyze and assign approved new installations and upgrades on wiring, construction, inspections and changes for electrical involvement; budget project costs and time allocations to make effective and efficient reports to department supervisors.
  • Conduct an ongoing review of the District's electrical supply (switch gear, buss-duct, cabling, XFMRs) to advise decision-makers of life expectancy and necessary replacement cycles.
  • Monitor limited electrical services and components with frequent downtime to keep the District operable under emergencies and other conditions.
  • Supervision and Training

  • Assist in the daily supervision and evaluation of electrical staff, document progress, and provide input regarding personnel management and discipline.
  • Prioritize work orders, and tasks to electricians based on safety, urgency, code, and/or functionality priorities.
  • Observe, train, and instruct all electrical staff to assist with advancing their knowledge and skills and to determine the most effective training needed.

  • Track work progress, record staff absences and attendance issues, and prepare reports as needed.
  • Prepare written reports and updates on projects and work orders to keep supervisors current on assignments and cost controls.

  • Interface with campus and department administrators to insure needs are met by maintenance staff.
