Job Title: Bus Driver

Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Primary Purpose: Operate school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned route and to and from other designated locations.

Qualifications:

  • Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam.
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Proficient map reading skills.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate bus.

Experience: None required.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Drive bus following assigned route and schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Anticipate problems like traffic and weather, and make adjustments for safety and timeliness.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections, report repairs, and keep bus clean.
  • Report accidents, damages, injuries, and mechanical issues.
  • Instruct students on safety rules, supervise boarding and exiting, and crossing streets.
  • Maintain discipline and manage student behavior.
  • Perform emergency evacuations when necessary.
  • Observe traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is in proper condition.
  • Report hazardous conditions and install snow chains during bad weather.
  • Maintain safety certification and operate communication equipment.
  • Keep records of mileage, fuel, and passenger counts.

Other: Supervisory responsibilities:
None.

Physical and Environmental Demands: Prolonged sitting, frequent standing, climbing stairs, exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, fumes, and irregular hours.
