Primary PurposeProvides support to the bus drivers. Rides the special education buses for Irving Independent School District and ensures safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities. Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes of the Irving Independent School District. Operates a mini-activity bus, suburban, or designated district non-CDL vehicle required for transporting students to and from school or designated locations.
QualificationsMinimum
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Must be 21 years of age
- Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions
- Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
- Ability to work well with students with special needs
- Ability to carry heavy loads quickly and safely
- Must have completed a 20-hour TEA Safety Course
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Class B CDL or able to obtain within 90 days of hire (start) date
- Ability to pass the annual DOT physical examination and random drug test
- Texas School bus driver certification or ability to obtain one
- Satisfactory driving record
Minimum Experience:
- One [1] year of experience in a related field preferred
Job Duties
- Safely and efficiently delivers students to and from schools by following assigned bus routes, adhering to established schedules, and obeying all traffic laws.
- Maintains safety precautions when students board and depart buses using hand-operated door mechanisms.
- Maintains discipline and reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrators.
- Maintains a current record of assigned routes and stops, including required seating charts for elementary and junior high students.
- Performs prompt, quick vehicle evacuations of students in emergencies.
- Keeps the vehicle’s interior clean and always maintains an appropriate fuel level in the vehicle.
- Inspects vehicles driven for students after each route and before returning to the Transportation facility.
- Checks vehicles driven for mechanical defects before and after each operation and immediately reports any abnormality or malfunction.
- Reports involvement in an accident, vehicle damage, and student injuries immediately; completes required reports.
- Administers basic first aid when necessary.
- Completes specialized training opportunities made available through the Transportation Department (e.g., CPR, first-aid, behind-the-wheel training, discipline management procedures).
- Maintains positive rapport with students, administrators, teachers, staff, and parents.
- Understands and observes state laws about vehicle safety.
- Attends required staff development and monthly safety meetings as required by Administration and Director.
- Assumes responsibility for personal daily timecards.
- Demonstrates professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
- Follows all rules, regulations, and policies of the Irving Independent School District.
- Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and Director.
