Job Title: BUS Monitor (SUMMER PROGRAM)

REPORTS TO:
Operations Manager and Assistant Director

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

Provides support to the bus drivers. Rides the special education buses for Irving independent school district and ensures safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities.

Qualifications

Minimum

Education/Certification:

-High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with students with special needs
  • Ability to carry heavy loads quickly and safely

Minimum Experience:

One [1] year of experience in a related field preferred

Major Responsibilities and

Job Duties
  • Attendants see that each student gets off the bus at their assigned school.
  • Assist students in getting personal items from home to the school’s campus and returning on the PM run.
  • Keep all students seated (assigned seats are recommended).
  • Keep the inside of the bus swept and clean. The bus will be left clean after each run, regardless of which bus is used. Substitute buses will be treated as regular bus assignments.
  • The attendant will assist daycare students to the front door when dropping them off and help them from the front door to the bus when picking them up in the morning. Students will not be let off the bus by themselves to go into centers.
  • Seat belts or harnesses will be used on all students who are unable to sit in the seat safely by themselves.
  • Attendants are responsible for proper emergency procedures when dealing directly with the safety and care of passengers.
  • Attendants are to use proper forms for student behavior problems.
  • Attendants placed on a regular education bus will be responsible for student discipline and control.
  • Be able to communicate in English on the radio and in person.
  • All other duties as assigned by the director or designee.

    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

    Tools/Equipment Used:
    Use various equipment to accommodate special needs students to include (but are not limited to) wheelchair lifts, seat belts, mobility devices, special harness wheelchair tie-downs, restraint belts, and car seats.

    Posture:
    Prolonged sitting and standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

    Motion:
    Frequent walking, standing, and sitting; going up and down the stairs of a bus up to 16 times per route from 20” elevation (3 daily bus routes); ability to safely exit the rear of the bus from 4’ height; ability to walk 35 yards within 25 seconds.

    Lifting:
    Regular light lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs. Team lifting is not likely to exceed 150 lbs.;
    Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.

    Environment:
    Exposure to temperature extremes (hot or cold); exposure to humidity extremes; exposure to noise; work prolonged or irregular hours; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.

    Mental Demands:
    Effective communication skills (both verbal and written); maintains effective control over groups of students; responds appropriately in emergencies; maintains emotional control under stressful conditions.

    Safety:
    Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to the supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
