Position: SANITATION OPERATOR I

Responsibilities

  • Pick up all excess bags and trash around dumpsters
  • Pick up brush and debris and load it on truck
  • Perform daily vehicle maintenance as required
  • Assist driver in cleaning and washing of trucks
  • Repair broken rollouts and install lids on dumpsters
  • Pick up litter
  • If qualified, fill in as driver for other positions as assigned
  • Pick up dead animals as assigned
  • Use power tools as assigned
  • General cleanup of grounds and buildings at City facilities
  • Use abrasive cleaning machine to remove paint from containers in need of repair
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor
Qualifications
  • Valid Texas Driver License;
    Class B Commercial Driver License without air brake restrictions required within 1 year after hire date
  • Ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak English effectively
  • High school diploma or GED is a plus but not required; experience desirable but not required
  • Physical ability to work in extreme weather conditions, lift containers daily, learn designated routes to fill in as driver when needed, and operate power tools
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Outdoors in unpleasant work conditions involving adverse weather, noise, odors, and dirt. Strenuous work that requires moderate to heavy physical activity, including getting on and off the vehicle 100 to 300 times daily. Hazards include bad weather, machinery, chemicals, items placed in containers, and working around electrical lines. Ability to sit, stand, and drive to and from various worksites. Exposure to seasonal temperatures while performing maintenance duties and mechanical and chemical hazards.

Ability to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and 5-100 pounds occasionally, bend, stoop, walk, push brooms, sweep, dig, and walk over sloped and uneven terrain. Work involves getting dirty and wet, cutting trees and limbs, and exposure to dirt, dust, noise, fumes, and odors. Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with the public. Occasionally required to work more than 40 hours per week and on holidays and weekends.
