The Unique Needs Specialist (UNS) possesses specialized skills to assist challenging students in their special education program and help them progress toward IEP goals and objectives. The UNS demonstrates strong behavioral management skills to support students with significant behavior disabilities and reports directly to the Special Education Classroom teacher, the building team, and central administrative staff.
Essential Functions- Participate in ongoing advanced training related to students with significant behavioral challenges and complete leveled trainings within the district’s behavioral training system.
- Demonstrate high‑level observational and behavioral intervention skills for students with complex needs.
- Implement programming designed by district behavioral and instructional specialists and work closely with the support team to advance individual student programming.
- Collaborate with the student’s support team to implement programming.
- Implement data systems as designed by behavioral and instructional specialists.
- Implement Right Response techniques with fidelity and complete related data collection.
- Implement Emergency Response Protocols and Crisis Plans in partnership with school administrators and teams.
- Provide support to teachers and paraprofessionals related to student behavior.
- Maintain confidentiality of special education students regarding disabilities, school program, instructional/behavioral status, progress, plans and placements.
- Implement instructional/behavioral programs including bus rides, positive behavior support plans, visual supports, environmental supports, and assistive technology as appropriate.
- Assist with preparation of instructional materials and tasks.
- Provide instruction to groups of students or on a one‑to‑one basis.
- Care for the upkeep of specialized equipment used with the students in the classroom.
- Follow the teacher’s plan for communication with parents and outside service providers.
- Attend district training, collaborative team meetings, and IEP or student planning meetings as required.
- Possess knowledge of and adhere to governing policies, district regulations, and procedures.
- Participate in special projects as assigned and perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
- Assist and support student learning in a remote learning environment. Training and equipment will be provided as needed to perform these duties.
Education: Registered Behavior or Technician Certification highly preferred. An associate’s degree (AA) or higher, or two years of study equivalent to 72 quarter credits, or an Educational Testing Service Para Pro Assessment score of 461 or higher. Official documentation required upon hire.
Experience: Desired. Prior classroom or similar experience working with students with special needs is preferred, including experience implementing ABA methodologies as an RBT. Additional qualifications include:
- Ability to implement district behavioral programming with a variety of students.
- Ability to establish rapport with students, including those with significant physical, emotional, behavioral, communication, and/or cognitive limitations.
- Ability to take direction, work independently, show initiative, and accept responsibility.
- Ability to work as an effective team member.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a pleasant, tactful, and professional manner.
- Ability to adjust daily to various scheduling changes and changes in students’ needs.
- Physical stamina and good health necessary to perform required responsibilities, including lifting and transferring at least 45 pounds if needed.
Certificates and Licenses: Current CPR/First Aid/AED card or willingness to obtain within 30 days. Right Response certification or willingness to obtain in training provided by the district. Valid Washington State driver’s license and appropriate insurance required. Must maintain current certifications and licenses at hire date.
