Description
The manager is accountable for the overall management and leadership of a unit or a group of patient care units within Nursing Services, overseeing all clinical and operational activities in accordance with Swedish Medical Center’s mission, vision, and values.
Department Overview- Labor and Delivery: 10 labor beds + Antepartum rooms
- OB ED: 6 beds total
- OB ORs: 2 operating rooms
- Births:
Approximately 180 per month / 2,200 per year - NICU:
Level 2 - Teams: OB Hospitalists, OB groups, Midwifery, MFM
- 24/7 Services:
Anesthesia, OB Hospitalist, and Neonatology - Patient care delivered 24 hours a day, coordinating with the health care team
- Establishes and enforces standards of patient care and nursing practice, developing unit‑based quality improvement programs and goals
- Ensures compliance with department standards, implementing corrective actions as needed
- Evaluates patient care and family satisfaction, conducting rounds and intervening accordingly
- Advocates for patients on ethical/legal issues and supports cultural practices
- Tracks staff turnover and takes steps to reduce it
- Spends time on all shifts to coach and evaluate staff
- Collaborates with clinical nurse specialists and educators to implement educational programs for all staff levels
- Focus on perinatal quality metrics (NTSV, L&D OR, PPH, OB Emergency department) and collaborate for sustained improvement
- Partner with CNS, Perinatal Educator, and the team on evidence‑based practice changes
- Interview and hire experienced staff RNs and residency/fellowship candidates for L&D
- Lead patient care operations 24 hours a day, ensuring delivery of care per professional and medical center standards
- Develop, implement, and monitor unit‑based quality improvement programs
- Identify and correct problems to maintain departmental compliance
- Assess patient assignments and family satisfaction through rounds
- Advocate for patients, addressing ethical/legal issues and cultural practices
- Retain staff by tracking turnover and taking remedial actions
- Learn and coach staff by spending time on all shifts
- Adjust up to step‑two grievances and collaborate on education programs
- Bachelor's Degree BSN or ADN with commitment to obtain BSN within two years of hire
- Washington Registered Nurse License upon hire
- National Provider BLS – American Heart Association upon hire
- Three years of recent experience in a related clinical nursing area
- Must meet criteria of Registered Nurse
- Master's Degree in Nursing or related field
- One year of first‑line management experience
