Summary
The City of Issaquah is seeking an Equipment Mechanic or Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic, depending on your qualifications.

The City of Issaquah owns and operates 300+ pieces of mixed equipment types. This position performs a wide variety of maintenance and repair functions on gasoline and diesel engines, and specialized maintenance equipment in the City shop (and the field as necessary). Repairs vary, including engines, transmission, hydraulic systems and brake systems. An incumbent also performs preventive maintenance and is responsible for the repair and replacement of parts and fluids.

Work is performed independently and requires substantial technical knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair.

Vehicle types include but are not limited to:
Hybrid and EV vehicles, police vehicles, heavy duty trucks, lawn and turf equipment, sweepers, cars, pickup trucks, backhoes and snow equipment.

The incumbent will independently perform technically difficult mechanical repair and parts replacement in accordance with specific procedures, and established practices, and under intermittent supervision. The incumbent prioritizes and organizes their work to meet deadlines and goals.

When compared to the Equipment Mechanic position, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic position offers more diverse duties, including some occasional fabrication of specialized parts for a variety of equipment, including police vehicles.

Salary:

Mechanic - $73,123 - $96,233

Heavy Equipment Mechanic - $80,452 - $105,870

Essential Functions
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Diagnoses OBD II malfunctions, including drivetrain and all CANbus related systems, and makes quality repairs by adjusting or replacing components.
  • Repair or replace engines, transmissions as required.
  • Services vehicles with oil, changes filters, installs anti-freeze, lubricates vehicles, adjusts brakes, and other similar servicing and tune-up procedures. Quality diagnosis and repairs to safety related systems by industry standards.
  • Orders and maintains supplies and records, as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
High School Diploma, or G.E.D., specialized training in automotive and/or heavy equipment systems repair, and three years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record free from serious or frequent violations.
  • CDL Class A with air brake restriction removed and tank and hazardous material endorsements, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within six months.
OTHER
Passing a background check and comprehensive physical exam are required before hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulics, shop techniques, welding, and cutting.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply shop manual information and tune-up specifications.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair major and minor mechanical and electrical defects in vehicles and heavy equipment.
