Job Description

This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting laboratory operations through troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. The position involves working primarily with adult and geriatric patients, with additional responsibilities in pediatric collections, including heel sticks on babies. The phlebotomist will draw and process specimens, ensure accurate labeling and handling, and provide clear, courteous communication to patients and clinical staff in a variety of clinic settings.

Responsibilities

+ Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

+ Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.

+ Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, including adults, geriatrics, and pediatric patients.

+ Demonstrate and maintain proper phlebotomy techniques for a range of patient populations, from pediatric through geriatric.

+ Review and fully understand physicians' orders prior to performing specimen collection.

+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and patient identification.

+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.

+ Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.

+ Package specimens for transport, following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.

+ Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes.

+ Accurately label specimens and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols for transport and processing.

+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, biohazard handling, and laboratory practices.

+ Attend required annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.

+ Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and address inquiries in a professional manner.

+ Work efficiently in a high-volume environment and independently manage 30-40 blood draws per shift.

+ Support specimen processing after drawing, as needed, to ensure timely and accurate laboratory testing.

+ Provide excellent customer service to patients and clinical staff while multitasking across multiple responsibilities.

+ Travel to and work in a variety of clinic locations as part of a float position, adapting to different site workflows and teams.

+ Make recommendations to improve workflow and assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and processing.

Essential Skills

+ Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.

+ Demonstrated experience performing blood draws using straight needles.

+ Pediatric through geriatric blood draw experience, with at least 1-2 years of experience, including heel sticks on babies.

+ Proficiency in venipuncture and phlebotomy across diverse patient populations.

+ Ability to independently handle 30-40 blood draws per shift.

+ Strong multitasking abilities and critical thinking skills in a clinical environment.

+ Excellent customer service and patient communication skills.

+

Experience with labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.

+ Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify orders.

+ Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.

+ Comfort working primarily with adults and geriatric patients, with additional pediatric experience.

+ High school diploma or GED.

+ Valid driver's license.

+ Reliable means of transportation to travel between clinic locations.

Skills & Qualifications

+ Experience processing specimens after drawing, including preparing samples for transport and laboratory analysis.

+ Prior experience as a mobile phlebotomist or in a float role working across multiple clinic sites.

+ Familiarity with laboratory environments and workflows, including specimen collection, handling, and documentation.

+ Strong telephone etiquette and ability to communicate laboratory results and information professionally.

+ Ability to adapt quickly to different clinical settings, teams, and patient volumes.

+ Comfort working with pediatric patients, including performing heel sticks on infants.

Work Environment

This role is a float phlebotomist position based in a clinical and laboratory environment, with training provided during the first two weeks at a designated site. After training, the phlebotomist will travel regularly to multiple clinic locations, including sites in Joliet, Makena, Marionette Park, Palos Park, Oak Brook, Tinley Park, Chicago, Evanston, and Waukegan in Illinois.
