Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in collecting, processing, and transporting laboratory specimens while ensuring a smooth workflow, supporting troubleshooting, and assisting with training. This role involves working across multiple clinic locations, performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection, and delivering excellent customer service to primarily adult and geriatric patients, with some pediatric responsibilities.

Responsibilities

+ Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

+ Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.

+ Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients.

+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.

+ Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.

+ Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity.

+ Package specimens for transport, following all procedures and protocols to ensure safe and compliant handling.

+ Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.

+ Accurately follow different procedures as outlined by protocol for specimen labeling, handling, and transport.

+ Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control standards.

+ Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.

+ Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.

+ Work primarily with adult and geriatric patients, with the ability to perform pediatric draws, including heel sticks on babies.

+ Handle a high volume of draws, typically 30-40 per shift, while maintaining accuracy, quality, and patient-centered care.

+ Travel between multiple clinic locations in a float capacity, adapting to different site workflows and teams.

+ Use critical thinking and multitasking skills to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a busy clinical environment.

+ Provide courteous, empathetic, and professional customer service to all patients and clinic staff.

Essential Skills

+ Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a phlebotomist.

+ 1-2 years of experience performing pediatric through geriatric blood draws, including heel sticks on babies.

+ Proficiency in venipuncture and blood drawing using straight needles.

+ Demonstrated experience with standard phlebotomy techniques and specimen collection.

+ Ability to independently perform and manage 30-40 blood draws per shift.

+ Strong multitasking and critical thinking skills in a clinical setting.

+ Excellent customer service and communication skills with patients and staff.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clinical and laboratory environment with initial training provided during the first two weeks at a designated site. After training, the Phlebotomist II works in a float capacity, traveling to a variety of clinic locations across areas such as Halsted, Addison, Schaumburg, Oak Park, Lakeview, Downtown Chicago, and additional sites as needed. Mileage is reimbursed for travel between locations.

The schedule is provided 1-2 weeks in advance, with availability needed Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and rotating Saturday shifts from approximately 8:00 a.m.

-12:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m.

-1:00 p.m. When scheduled for a Saturday shift (typically about once per month), a weekday off is provided.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Itasca, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
