Field Service Technician

The Field Service Technician supports the testing, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and commissioning of electromechanical fare boxes used on public buses and trains across the United States. Approximately 75% of the role focuses on in-house repair and board-level circuit work, while the remaining 25% involves national field service travel to customer sites for installations and on-site support. This position offers strong training, mentorship, and growth opportunities for candidates interested in complex electrical and electromechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Test, troubleshoot, and repair production and field service electronic and mechanical assemblies, parts, and equipment, primarily in-house.
  • Perform board-level circuit repair and analysis, including soldering and component replacement.
  • Adjust and calibrate circuitry and components using established principles and theories of electronics.
  • Set up and operate test equipment and circuitry to conduct functional and operational tests on electronic assemblies.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, PCB blueprints, and other technical diagrams to diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Travel to customer sites across the country to perform installations, commissioning, and field-level repairs on buses and trains.
  • Install and commission new electromechanical fare box units, including modular-level installation work when required.
  • Provide on-site field support to customers, ensuring equipment operates reliably and meets performance expectations.
  • Write clear technical reports documenting installation activities, test results, and overall equipment performance.
  • Plan, coordinate, and deliver in-house product training to internal teams or customers as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and internal stakeholders in a client-facing capacity, addressing questions and providing status updates.
  • Solicit customer feedback to identify opportunities to improve service quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Use SAP, Microsoft Office, and related business software to document work, track service activities, and communicate with the team.
  • Apply basic algebra and geometry concepts to measurements, calibrations, and technical problem solving.
  • Interpret and follow a variety of instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form to complete service tasks accurately.
  • Participate in a flexible work schedule that includes overnight work and weekend travel as required for installations and repairs.
  • Maintain a high standard of workmanship, safety, and professionalism in both in-house and field environments.

Essential Skills

  • 1–3 years of experience in electromechanical service or field service, or a relevant technical college degree.
  • Hands-on soldering experience for board-level repair and assembly work.
  • Proficiency in board-level circuit repair and analysis, including troubleshooting electronic components.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints and PCB blueprints accurately.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for a client-facing technical role.
  • Electro-mechanical experience with practical experience working on electronic and mechanical assemblies.
  • 1–2 years of related technical experience in testing, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic/mechanical systems.
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally at least 25% of the time, with flexibility to increase travel after training.
  • Ability to set up and use electronic test equipment to conduct functional and operational tests.
  • Capability to adjust and calibrate electronic circuitry and components using standard electronic principles.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and work with a variety of variables in field and production environments.
  • Skill in interpreting instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in a technical field is a plus.
  • Experience with modular-level installation of electromechanical units is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience working with logic boards that incorporate firmware or software.
