Position: Temporary Technical Event Support Assistant (Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Temporary Technical Event Support Assistant (Cornell Lab of Ornithology);
Ithaca, New York

Position Type: Nonexempt, temporary, part‑time (18 hours per week) for one year, contingent upon funding and performance.

Location: Ithaca, New York, on‑site.

Compensation: $31.66 per hour.

About the Lab: The Cornell Lab of Ornithology IT team provides responsive technical support services throughout the Lab for staff and public‑facing devices. This role is part of the Desktop Services Team, working closely with audio‑visual, network, and facilities teams to enhance the Lab’s IT capabilities, especially in audiovisual, conference room, and Visitor Center support.

Responsibilities
  • Provide complex technical support for teleconferences, webinars, and distance‑learning classes, operating advanced audio and video recording systems.
  • Install, configure, and maintain hardware and software for workstations, printers, and other office equipment in line with defined procedures.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to design, procure, and implement AV upgrades, ensuring they meet staff needs.
  • Deliver responsive, effective IT support to staff, faculty, students, and the public as needed.
  • Troubleshoot network, software, and hardware issues in partnership with Cornell peer IT staff.
  • Recommend IT hardware purchases, upgrades, and disposal options.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of experience in information technology, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Proficiency with common web‑conferencing platforms (Zoom, Teams, Zoom Webinars, etc.).
  • Knowledge of standard and specialized technological equipment; ability to stay current with industry trends.
  • Experience providing IT desktop support, office software, video and audio device support, and computer and network security.
  • Skill in maintaining and upgrading equipment in Visitor Center and Conference Rooms.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to respond quickly to calls.
  • Advanced reasoning and problem‑solving capabilities.
  • Understanding of network media transmission and multicasting environments.
  • Ability to advocate for and cultivate inclusive relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Flexible schedule; availability for occasional evenings and weekends as required.
  • Physical ability to lift 20‑50 pounds.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and customer‑service orientation.
  • High ethical judgment and confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Capability to translate technical information into non‑technical terms.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Independent problem resolution under general supervision and team collaboration.
  • Professionalism and strong interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with audio and video control and switching systems such as Crestron.
  • Knowledge of audio and video file types and codecs for creation and playback.
