Position: TELEVISION AND RADIO OPERATIONS MANAGER
Job Description

Job Summary:

Provide leadership in the management of three student-operated co-curricular media organizations for 600+ students within the Roy H. Park School of Communications:
Ithaca College Television (ICTV), WICB-FM, online radio station VIC. As the advisor and general manager, you will:
Coordinate television and radio programming and studio schedules;
Mentor student producers, on-air talent, and managers;
Ensure efficient use of resources and high quality of programming that is publicly distributed;
Work with faculty, staff, alumni, and other professionals with expertise in radio and television production and programming to provide training to students;
Prepare and file license renewals for WICB-FM and maintain current knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and cable television regulations;
Advise students on appropriate underwriting, sales, promotion, publicity and fund-raising efforts;
Oversee project and operating budgets and ensure compliance with Ithaca College policies and procedures and with state and federal regulatory agencies;
Connect students with appropriate campus resources/Help students navigate campus resources;
Hire and maintain an executive staff of roughly 30 student employees;
Facilitate special opportunities for students, including travel to conferences and major sporting events.

Supervision:

This position reports to the Dean.

Core Responsibilities:

Radio & Television Operations Management
  • Oversee, manage, coordinate and administer the activities of the student-operated radio stations WICB-FM and VIC. Establish and maintain production standards for all radio programming origination. Ensure compliance with legal requirements of the Federal Communications Commission. Prepare and file license renewals in compliance with station and School policies and procedures. Develop and update radio policies and standards. Develop, supervise, and coordinate appropriate sales, promotion, publicity and fund-raising efforts.
  • Oversee, manage, coordinate and administer the activities of student-operated ICTV which provides programming on cable and online. Mentor students in developing programs and production and distribution schedules. Develop and update policies and standards for ICTV. Ensure compliance with appropriate cable regulations. Develop, supervise, and coordinate appropriate sales, promotion, publicity and fund-raising efforts.
  • Support content development and programming for traditional and emerging audio and television platforms to include web and mobile platforms.
  • Coordinate the use and maintenance of on-air and production facilities in consultation with the Director of Technical Operations and with faculty and administration in the Park School.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of professional practices and industry trends in radio and television by seeking appropriate professional development through conferences and networking. Work closely with the Director of Technical Operations to research, recommend, and design facility and software changes to keep the operations current.
Student Leadership, Supervision & Development
  • Be available to students during working hours as well as some nights and weekends, including Saturday football broadcasts; meet regularly with student staff to coordinate, guide, monitor, and evaluate television and radio operations and mentor student leaders in managerial aspects.
  • Work with student station leaders to recruit new student volunteers and solicit proposals for new shows. Recruit, select, supervise, and mentor paid student staff and take personnel actions including hiring (with administrative support), promotion, and dismissals. Manage selection, develop schedules, and approve timecards for paid student employees including those who maintain WICB's required on-air presence over college breaks and the summer.
  • Advise and evaluate student staff on professional broadcast procedures and help them develop managerial and leadership skills; establish and maintain professional standards appropriate to a college student organization in program production, content, and broadcast operations.
  • Work with members of the Technical Operations staff to ensure proper training on and operation of radio and television equipment.
Budgeting, Compliance & Administration
  • Manage all television and radio operational and project budgets and appropriately allocate operating and project budget resources with support from the Administrative and Financial Operations team. Work with students to develop travel authorizations and coordinate student travel for radio and television production, and for attendance at conferences and award ceremonies.
  • Develop and supervise a systematic performance evaluation process, including critiques of student staff performance. Develop and assess student learning outcomes.
