The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Laboratory Technician to support aquatic animal health research within the Lovy Laboratory in the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health. This position plays a key role in advancing research focused on infectious diseases of fish through laboratory diagnostics, molecular biology, experimental research using finfish, field surveillance, and laboratory operations management. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, students, and research staff in a collaborative environment by combining field and experimental research to improve understanding of fish disease ecology on both national and international levels.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Conduct and support aquatic animal health research, including fish necropsy, pathogen detection using molecular diagnostics, microbiology, and field sample collection.

* Support fish husbandry and set up/oversee laboratory experiments in an aquatics facility focused on disease ecology research in finfish.

* Manage daily laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, chemical and inventory oversight, reagent preparation, database organization, and safety compliance.

* Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and research team to develop protocols, analyze data, adapt laboratory methods, and support scientific publications and grant activities.

* Train and support students and research personnel while fostering a collaborative, organized, and inclusive laboratory environment.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in biological science with at least 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders including faculty, students, and staff, in both verbal and written formats.

* Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail while managing multiple projects.

* Ability to work collaboratively and contribute positively within a team-oriented laboratory setting.

* Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques, procedures, and technologies

* Successful completion of required Cornell compliance and safety training if not already taken.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience with fisheries science, aseptic tissue collection, molecular biology techniques, microbiological methods, microscopy, working with aquatic systems designed for finfish research, and scientific data collection/analysis.

* Demonstrated ability to adapt published procedures to the specific needs of the project.

* Strong computer skills and experience with image analysis and statistical computer programs

Important Details about the Position

* This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.

* This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.

* We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.

* Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
