Temporary Laboratory/Research Technician — Department of Entomology, Ithaca, New York
Job Type: Temporary, 6‑month position (39 hours per week).
Location: Ithaca, NY.
About the College:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is the second‑largest college at Cornell University and focuses on research, education, and outreach in natural and human systems, food, energy, environmental resources, and social, physical, and economic well‑being.
Responsibilities- Conduct molecular assays, handle research animals, identify mosquito species using dichotomous keys, record data, and perform complex data analysis.
- Assist with supply inventory and label chemicals for disposal.
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and maintain a solid understanding of safety techniques and procedures.
- Maintain laboratory and field records in written and computerized formats.
- High School Diploma and 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and work autonomously.
- Experience working with chemicals that require careful handling.
- Maintain laboratory safety protocols at all times.
- Ability to lift 20–50 pounds.
- Punctual, reliable, and willing to work irregular hours occasionally.
- Comfortable with basic database, word‑processing, and data‑recording tools.
- Basic molecular biology skills, such as DNA extraction and PCR.
- Experience rearining and working with mosquitoes.
- Experience interacting with people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Associate’s Degree and 2+ years of college coursework in biology.
- Statistical analysis experience in R.
- Experience with mosquito rearing, injections, and dissections.
- RNA extraction experience.
- Compensation range: $23.40 to $23.69 per hour.
