About the College

The Reed Lab in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University is looking to hire a Technician II. Research in the Reed Lab focuses on the developmental genetics of butterfly wing patterns. The technician would work closely with the PI and graduate students to assist with routine molecular biology work, maintenance of butterfly colonies, and simple tissue dissection and preparation tasks.

Laboratory protocols would primarily include RNA and DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, embryo injections, preparation of sequencing samples, and preliminary analysis of DNA sequencing results. The technician may also be asked to train and oversee undergraduate lab assistants to help with maintenance of plants and butterfly colonies.

This is a full-time position at 97.5% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

What We Need

* Bachelor's degree or other formal training program of four years;

* 1-2 years of laboratory experience or the equivalent experience in lab courses.

* Visual concentration and manual dexterity are required.

* Must be well organized and detail oriented.

* Must have good knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.

* Ability to multi-task and develop strong working relationships with a variety of people.

* Must possess communication skills.

* Knowledge of and experience with, at minimum, basic computer programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
