The Entomological Data Science Lab is interested in answering ecological, biodiversity, and conservation questions in insects by combining traditional field research with cutting-edge data science. The Lab studies a variety of insect systems, including bumblebees and butterflies, and seek to combine and utilize different types of data to answer scientific inquiries in novel ways, such as citizen science data and genomic data.

This position involves supporting ongoing projects in the lab while gaining hands-on research experience. There is also an opportunity to design and pursue a small independent research project.

The position is located within the department of Entomology. Provide a wide variety of moderately complex technical lab support for a research program/facility. Develop database and maintaining moderately complex laboratory records. May perform library and/or internet research. Prepare non-standard stains, media, buffers and reagents. Provide assistance in manipulating, computing and analyzing data using complex statistical computer software. Perform a variety of tests requiring adequate degree of proficiency.

Provide care for research specimen and/or samples. Perform

DNA extractions from plant and animal material. Collect insects in the field to bring back to the lab.

Arrange for the maintenance of laboratory equipment. Moderately complex set-up, assembly, installation and building of components or equipment; may conduct complex testing and troubleshooting and make repairs. Ensure that less experienced lab personnel adhere to all disease control and laboratory safety protocols. May ensure and/or prepare and label laboratory waste for disposal per protocols. Complete training on lab safety and proper handling of chemicals as required by CALS EHS.

May contribute to data findings or assist in fact finding for inclusion to research designated areas of report/article for publication as requested. Assist in evaluating lab methods, procedures and techniques based on established objectives. Set up equipment and materials for course instruction and may assist training lab methods, procedures and safety. May provide coordination of schedules, oversee temp/student assistant; coordinate supervision and training of laboratory methods, procedures and safety as assigned Maintain inventory and order or coordinate supply procurement in partnership with business service center.

This is a full-time position at 97.5% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.
