The position is located within the department of Entomology. Primary duties will include supervised research on the genetics of Drosophila antibacterial immunity, as well as general lab maintenance and support. Maintenance of Drosophila genetic strains, execute genetic crosses, use basic microbiology techniques, infect Drosophila with bacteria and measure post-infection phenotypes, some molecular biology laboratory work. Prepare standard stains, media, buffers and reagents.

Perform a variety of standard cell/tissue assays, culture preparation and/or analyses. Analyze data using straightforward statistical methods and computer software; maintain database and lab records. Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and overall laboratory hygiene. Complete training on lab safety and proper handling of chemicals and biological material as required by CALS EHS. Prepare laboratory waster for disposal per protocols. Document laboratory procedures.

Assist with inventory and ordering of supplies as directed.

This is a full-time position at 100% FTE. This is a one-year term appointment that is contingent upon available work, funding, and performance.

What We Need

* High school diploma and up to 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.

* Prior experience in a laboratory setting.

* Prior knowledge of safety protocols in a lab setting and proper waste handling.

* Experience with Microsoft office suite - including Word, PowerPoint and Excel and familiarity with outlook.

* Ability to communicate verbally and written with faculty, staff and students.

* Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

* Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.

* Experience working with inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing programs

* Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.

* Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds.

* Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
