Performs and provides guidance in the skilled operation of a wide variety of landscape and construction, maintenance equipment, lawn maintenance equipment, motorized wheeled vehicles, commercial trucks and tractors exceeding 25,000 lbs. to support landscape and utility construction, general excavation, and snow plowing
Performs manual labor, including shoveling, catch basin cleaning, tamping, litter control, herbicide applications and other similar tasks as assigned
Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment or facilities
Provides on the job training by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials while demonstrating proper methods for accomplishing specific tasks
Assists in planning, scheduling and estimating jobs
Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies
Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demand
Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods
May come in contact with sewage and dead animals
Regular exposure to bees and pollen
This is an endowed, union position within the United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW). The starting pay rate is $33.19/hour.

We require these qualifications:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- NYS Commercial Pesticide License or obtain within 3 years.
- Minimum of six years' experience with landscape maintenance and construction and related equipment operation, to include a minimum of three years' experience operating heavy motorized construction and snow plow equipment (exceeding 25,000 lbs.) and providing leadership relating to landscape/utility construction work, materials and equipment
- Strong interpersonal (oral and written) skills to interact with a diverse range of people
- Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team
- A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community
- Is motivated to learn and takes initiative to be proactive
- Demonstrated experience utilizing good judgment and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment
- Previous working experience reading plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints
- Experience planning and coordinating work crews
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites
- CDLB restricted license required or must obtain within 6 months of hire
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:
- AAS in construction technology or landscape operations
- Formal training in heavy equipment operation, and/or construction technologies, helpful
- OSHA 10 course
