General
Summary:
Under the supervision of Tax Supervisor. This work requires accounting and data entry skills, and the ability to work accurately and meet deadlines. This work also requires excellent customer service skills.
Typical Duties:
- Performs daily cash, check and charge transactions for property tax, special assessments, water bills, and income tax. Balance cash drawer daily for daily bank deposits.
- Opens, sorts and processes daily mail for Treasurer/Clerk's office. Prepares receipts for mortgage companies, title companies as well as for walk in customers.
- Assist customers with questions, providing answers to questions regarding property taxes, special assessments, water and income tax. Refer customers to appropriate department if unable to answer question.
- Assist taxpayers in completing income tax forms.
- Performs collection procedures according to departmental policy.
- Process mortgage company checks for tax roll file distributed by Tax Supervisor.
- Receives complaints and requests for information and services over the counter or by phone. Provides information on services and procedures.
- Audits refund tax returns and assists in entering refund batches.
- Validates checks for deposit and prepares cash turn-in reports, allocates monies to proper accounts according to assigned code numbers.
- Communicates with Assessor's office regarding address changes, name changes, and homestead status.
- Operates a personal computer to enter data, produce reports and prepare correspondence. Operates standard office equipment. Uses standard and specialized software.
- Provides election and voter information to citizens.
- Assists with income tax compliance.
- Issues parking permits.
- Maintain current mortgage code identifiers, communicate with mortgage companies.
Eligibility Requirements:
High school graduate or equivalent with two (2) years of office and accounting experience or equivalent combination of job-related education and experience. One year college course work preferred. Must be courteous, tactful, reliable, thorough and organized. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public and other City staff. Must be able to develop and promote excellent working relationships and provide exceptional customer service.
Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license and good driving record at time of appointment and maintain both during employment in this classification.
