SUMMARY

The HVAC Faculty member is a full-time instructional position responsible for delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, and related programming. This role emphasizes hands‑on, industry‑aligned instruction that prepares students for careers in residential and commercial HVAC fields. The faculty member will support program development, including the expansion of short‑term, stackable credentials and industry certifications.

They will also be responsible for continuous program review and management of industry advisory committees. This position must maintain strong connections with industry partners and contribute to curriculum design that reflects current technologies, safety standards, and workforce needs. Teaching assignments may include on‑campus and online environments. A commitment to academic excellence, instructional innovation, and student success is essential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach courses in heating, cooling, refrigeration, electrical controls, airflow, system diagnostics, and related areas across multiple delivery formats (lab, lecture, hybrid, and flex).
  • Deliver hands‑on, lab‑based instruction aligned with real‑world HVAC applications.
  • Stay current with industry codes and instructional best practices.
  • Develop and assess student learning using performance‑based and competency‑based approaches; provide timely, actionable feedback to support student professional mastery.
  • Maintain safe and effective learning environments in labs and classrooms.
  • Develop and update curriculum and course materials that reflect industry standards and employer needs, emphasizing skill development and workforce readiness.
  • Complete course and program reviews, and coordinate with the Perkins Grant Coordinator for annual reporting needs.
  • Integrate teaching strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and real‑world application, including scenario‑based learning, case study analysis, and active discussion.
  • Support the achievement and ongoing maintenance of HVAC Excellence program accreditation.
  • Assist in collecting, analyzing, and documenting program data related to student outcomes, completion, placement, and credential attainment.
  • Support dual enrollment and articulation partnerships with secondary schools and technical education providers.
  • Engage in regular communication and collaboration with industry partners, advisory boards, and regional stakeholders to ensure program relevance and foster workforce connections.
  • Participate in college governance, professional development, and student success initiatives.
  • Ensure all program documents (e.g., catalog, guide sheets, admission information, handbooks and website) are current and accurate.
  • Assist in department scheduling, staffing and budget planning to efficiently utilize college resources.
  • Understand, support, and actively demonstrate the college’s beliefs, values, mission, and vision and be evaluated accordingly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree in HVAC, Mechanical Systems or closely related field AND minimum 3 years of industry experience AND EPA 608 certification.
  • State of Michigan Mechanical Contractors License and 6 years of successful experience and EPA 608 certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Heating and cooling systems (gas, electric, heat pumps)
  • Refrigeration cycles and diagnostics
  • Electrical controls and system troubleshooting
  • Safety standards and environmental regulations

Ability to:

  • Develop curriculum, demonstrate proper safety, assess student performance, and maintain lab equipment.
  • Communicate technical expertise and prepare students for industry certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Regularly required to lift, bend, kneel and stand for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environment is typical of an instructional laboratory and classroom setting.
