Role Description
The Academic Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based at Vandercook Lake High School in Jackson, MI. This role provides individualized and group academic counseling to students, helping them develop educational plans, select appropriate courses, and monitor progress toward graduation requirements. The Academic Counselor supports students with career exploration, postsecondary planning, and college readiness, including coordinating information on applications, scholarships, and financial aid.
Day-to-day responsibilities include meeting with students and families, collaborating with teachers and administrators, maintaining accurate student records, and referring students to additional support services when needed. The role also involves contributing to school-wide initiatives that promote student engagement, social-emotional well-being, and a positive school climate.
- Demonstrated skills in student counseling and academic advising, with the ability to support diverse learners.
- Strong communication skills, including active listening, clear written communication, and effective collaboration with students, families, and staff.
- Experience or training in career counseling, including guiding students in exploring postsecondary education, training, and employment options.
- Background in education, such as a degree in School Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field, and knowledge of secondary school curricula and graduation requirements.
- Relevant certification or licensure as required by the State of Michigan for school counseling or academic advising roles.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, use student information systems, and manage multiple priorities in a school environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and supporting students from varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
