Custodial and Event Services Member

Inside Higher Ed is seeking a Custodial and Event Services Member to support events on Central Campus and occasional remote campus buildings and grounds. This role works a flexible schedule (including nights and weekends) to support events for internal and external clients. Duties include cleaning general and specialty areas, providing excellent customer service, and working effectively in a team environment.

Summary

Within the Custodial and Event Services Team, the position performs services for events such as college events, concerts, theater performances, weddings/receptions, sports events/fundraisers, and other non‑academic activities sponsored by Jackson College. The role requires flexibility to work nights, weekends, and early mornings as event schedules demand.

Essential Functions
  • Primary responsibility for the set‑up and tear down of events; setting up tables, chairs, and special equipment, and removing them afterward. Provides additional assistance to the Event Organizer as requested. Cleans event areas and all common spaces affected by event activities. Communicates any damages and additional work required to the Grounds and Custodial Director and Special Events & Community Relations Coordinator.
  • Work with other event/custodial team members to ensure full coverage of all events.
  • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events.
  • Coordinate with the supervisor on assignment and schedule planning for all special functions.
  • Provide first‑level support for college‑owned computer and audio/visual equipment during events, performing basic troubleshooting.
  • Empty trash and tidy bathrooms during events.
  • Maintain an inventory of necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Clean theaters, dressing rooms, common areas, dining rooms, lobbies, entrance ways, toilet rooms, hallways, and offices.
  • Swab, mop, dust interior areas; wash walls, windows, woodwork, furniture, and light fixtures; strip and polish hard‑surface floors; vacuum and clean carpet; dispose of waste materials (including bio‑hazard packaging).
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms; refill dispensers; sanitize toilet rooms, showers, and drinking fountains.
  • Strip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard‑surface floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools; operate buffers, auto scrubbers/extractors, high‑pressure washers, high‑speed buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for floors, walls, carpets, and furniture.
  • Wash walls and equipment; use ladders as required.
  • Check for unlocked doors and windows, report unauthorized occupants, and turn off lights.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.
  • Remove snow or debris from sidewalks to ensure safe passage for event attendees.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools on an incidental basis.
  • Wash accessible interior windows and interior/exterior doors; clean blinds.
  • Respond to work with a timely, professional, respectful, and proactive approach.
  • Assist staff and teams within the Facilities Department with work requests, projects, and daily operations as needed.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the college’s beliefs, values, mission, and vision; be willing to have performance evaluated on these grounds.
Contacts

Internal: Daily contact with supervisor; frequent contact with facilities department; interaction with college staff, administrators, and faculty; regular contact with Community Relations Office.
External: Regular contact with suppliers, guests, contractors, and vendors.
