Water Treatment Plant Mechanic/Relief Operator II
The City of Jackson is hiring a full‑time Water Treatment Plant Mechanic/Relief Operator II to work at the Water Treatment Plant and Pumping Station in Jackson, Michigan. The role reports to a higher classified employee and includes maintenance and repair of electrical, mechanical, and water supply systems, as well as relief operator duties as assigned.

Typical Duties- Installs or removes and overhauls major components of the water treatment system, including chemical feeders, clarifying tanks, filtration systems, pumps, wells, and storage tanks.
- Locates and repairs leaks and blockages in pipes and conduits.
- Tears down, cleans, lubricates, and reassembles motors, valves, pumps, and monitoring devices.
- Checks equipment malfunctions noted by operators, making adjustments and replacing or repairing parts as necessary.
- Rebuilds or modifies components of the water treatment system using welding, machining, tool making, blacksmithing, and masonry skills.
- Performs electrical, mechanical, carpentry work, and painting of pipes, buildings, and equipment.
- Hoses down equipment, changes chlorine tanks, and monitors chemical supplies.
- Responds to emergency breakdowns requiring immediate repair to maintain adequate water quality and quantity.
- As a relief operator, takes periodic meter readings in the control room/laboratory, performs chemical and bacteriological analyses of water samples, records meter readings and test results, notes abnormal conditions, and adjusts chemical dosages as necessary.
- Participates in general maintenance of buildings and grounds as necessary.
- Operates crane and performs tasks involved in pulling and replacing wells.
- Collects distribution system bacteriological samples.
- Drives vehicles in the performance of duties.
- Reports on timecards the jobs worked on and the equipment and materials used. Prepares regular reports as required.
- Documents work performed and parts and components repaired and replaced on operating equipment; enters data on maintenance logs and records for emergencies and planned maintenance schedules.
- Maintains operating equipment and work spaces in a clean and orderly manner (sweeping, painting, washing, corrosion control, storage of material and supplies).
- Performs all work consistent with safety procedures and MSDS guidelines, such as lock‑out/tag‑out, and regularly reviews safety procedures.
- Collects water samples for EGLE, EPA, or in‑house sampling.
- Performs laboratory work, including mixing reagents, preparing broths, and preparing standards.
- All other duties as assigned.
Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record at the time of appointment and maintain it during employment. Minimum two years of experience in equipment maintenance and repair, along with a high school education. A 2‑year vocational certificate or degree in a related field is desired, though not required. The position requires a minimum of F‑4 water treatment certification within one year of appointment, with ongoing maintenance of certification.
A valid Michigan Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must be obtained within six months of hire. Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English, follow written and oral instructions, work well with others, and maintain a record of lawful, sober citizenship. Physical and mental ability to perform essential duties is required.
Frequent standing, walking, use of arms, hands, and fingers, reaching, pulling, twisting, operating vibrating machinery, use of hand tools, lifting up to 90 lbs, and occasional lifting of heavier objects. Work both indoors and outdoors, often near moving equipment, handling hazardous chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment. Reasonable accommodations available.
