This role involves setting up and operating CNC lathes and mills to perform precision machining operations on a variety of metallic and non-metallic components. You will work from detailed specifications and blueprints, select appropriate tooling and work holding methods, and ensure all parts meet tight tolerances using precision measuring instruments. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and cleanliness in a modern manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC lathes and mills to perform machining operations such as turning, boring, threading, and facing on metallic parts including cast iron, stainless steel, brass, bronze, carbon steels, and non-metallic parts such as plastic and Teflon.
- Work in accordance with specifications, tooling instructions, and established machining procedures to produce high-quality components.
- Read and interpret prints and factory work orders to determine dimensions, tolerances, feed rates, cutting speeds, depths of cut, and required cutting tools.
- Position and secure tooling setups accurately to ensure safe and efficient machining operations.
- Insert work pieces into position and secure them using appropriate methods, such as mounting between centers, inserting in chucks, or clamping to face plates.
- Select and implement suitable methods of holding work pieces, including fabricating arbors or jaws when necessary to complete specific jobs.
- Adjust machine controls to set cutting speeds and feed rates, and to position tools correctly in relation to work pieces before and during machining.
- Run CNC machines and monitor operations to ensure parts are produced according to specifications and within required tolerances.
- Verify machined work pieces meet specifications with tolerances as close as 0.001 inches using micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, indicators, and other precision measuring tools.
- Obtain first-piece inspection approval before proceeding with production runs.
- Maintain machines by keeping them clean, properly lubricated, and in good working order.
- Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of debris to support efficient and safe operations.
- Perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions promptly to help maintain a safe working environment.
Essential Skills
- Ability to set up and operate CNC mills and/or lathes with at least 1 or more years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Competence in the use of calipers, micrometers, indicators, depth gauges, and various other precision measuring instruments.
- Hands-on experience with machining operations on CNC lathes and mills, including turning, boring, threading, and facing.
- Ability to work with a variety of materials, including cast iron, stainless steel, brass, bronze, carbon steels, plastics, and Teflon.
- Skill in selecting and securing appropriate tooling and work holding methods for different jobs.
- Capability to set cutting speeds, feed rates, and tool positions based on job requirements and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to hold tolerances as close as 0.001 inches.
- Commitment to following safety policies and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Jackson, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $25.00/hr.
