Registered Nurse positions are available in inpatient, outpatient, or residential treatment programs within correctional facilities or the Corrections Mental Health Program. Nurses may be hired for a specific area and assigned to any ambulatory or inpatient setting within the complex or facility.

Registered Nurse P11 performs a broad range of nursing duties. No specific experience is required.

Registered Nurse 12 works as a senior worker or emergency/clinic nursing services specialist. One year of RN experience is required, or a master’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing with six months of RN experience.

In this senior RN role, the nurse provides direct patient care independently on all units of the Health Center. Responsibilities include initiating and sustaining lifesaving care, performing full range of clinical nursing duties, exercising independent judgment beyond written procedures, and serving as Charge Nurse. The position requires daily contact with prisoners whose security levels range from minimum to maximum and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

These positions offer a stepping stone for advancement into supervisory roles.

The positions are located at the Duane Waters Health Center in Jackson County.

New hires at this facility receive a one‑time signing bonus of $5,000, paid as a $1,500 gross pay adjustment on the first pay warrant and the remaining $3,500 upon completing one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service. If an employee leaves within one year, the entire bonus must be repaid.

• Registered Nurse P11‑12:
  Possession of a diploma, associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in nursing accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.

• Registered Nurse P11:
  No specific type or amount of experience required.
• Registered Nurse 12:
  One year of experience as a registered nurse.
• Alternate requirement:
  Master’s degree in nursing, or bachelor’s degree with six months of RN experience.

MDOC may screen out applicants convicted of a felony per Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible until satisfactory completion of any sentence, including parole or probation.

New hires, as well as returning employees away from the department for more than two years, complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) – either 40 or 80 hours of initial in‑person training based on offender contact level and job classification. Additional online training will also be required.
