The Clinical Unit Leader (CUL) operates under general supervision from the department manager and/or director and, in accordance with policies and guidelines, functions as shift supervisor and clinical liaison with staff, physicians, and management. The CUL serves as a supervisor, role model, mentor, coach, and resource to staff to ensure unit standards are maintained and create a team‑oriented work environment.

The CUL is involved in attracting, developing, maintaining, and retaining qualified staff members. Duties include assisting with hiring, orientation, monitoring, evaluating performance, problem‑solving, employee counseling and corrective action, staffing, assignment and direction of staff, and payroll. The CUL also serves as a contact for internal and external customers, fostering positive customer service and meeting quality and accreditation standards and implementing and monitoring new processes.

Clinical Practice
:
Rotate to the off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the nurse manager to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of staff.

Management of Clinical Area
:
Participate in development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives; identify and plan for staffing consistent with patient population and budgetary requirements; participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priority of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.

QA and Research
:
Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality metrics and quality improvement activities; promote integration of research findings into clinical practice; encourage staff involvement in evidence‑based practice and clinical research.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with the expectation of obtaining a BSN within five (5) years
• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an acute care environment

• Current Michigan Nursing License
• ACLS certification within one (1) year of hire

• Ability to problem‑solve; effective verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills necessary for effective leadership of the patient care team
• Strong nursing processes, critical thinking, and advanced assessment skills required
• Knowledge about and experience in the department population served

• Previous experience in a leadership role (Charge Nurse, Supervisor, Shift Supervisor, etc.)
• Professional certifications to support a culture of nursing excellence
