Department of Public Works Maintenance Worker – Internal & External Posting
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, operates various pieces of construction type equipment in the process of maintaining, repairing streets, public rights‑of‑way, buildings, properties and utilities. Performs a variety of tasks to construct, maintain and repair streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, manholes, catch basins, water mains and sewers.
Responsibilities- Read and comprehend equipment manuals explaining the operation and maintenance of machinery.
- Install and repair broken water mains and repair or replace water services.
- Replace and install fire hydrants or repair hydrants by replacing worn parts such as pins, bolts and foot valves.
- Replace and install water valves or repair valves by replacing bolts, gaskets and valves.
- Raise or lower manholes, catch basins, fire hydrants and valve boxes.
- Service and replace water meters as necessary.
- Notify water system customers when water services must be disrupted.
- Operate trucks to haul materials, equipment and personnel in connection with maintenance and construction projects.
- Operate a variety of utility equipment including pumps, air compressors and tapping machines.
- Operate backhoes, loaders, excavators, tractors, lawn mowers and other equipment, as assigned.
- May be required to mark location of water and sewer utilities.
- Open, store and compact backfill in trenches and other excavations.
- Operate snow removal equipment on streets, sidewalks and parking areas.
- Perform preventive maintenance, repair and modification work on equipment and machinery at the wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant and pumping stations, including lubrication, adjusting or replacing pump packing, disassembly and reassembly of pumps, replacement of bearings and seals, and other general maintenance as prescribed in equipment manuals.
- Assist with emergency maintenance work as assigned.
- Participate in general building, grounds, forestry and street maintenance work as assigned.
- Maintain and clean work area, equipment, tools, and maintenance vehicles.
- Return tools and materials to proper storage area and record use of parts and materials as assigned.
- Be available to respond to emergency call‑out situations.
- Report on a timecard the jobs worked and prepare other reports as required.
- May perform work of lower classified employee as assigned.
- Perform all other activities as assigned.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of hands and fingers, talking and hearing. Must be able to squat, stoop, or kneel. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds of material. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Eligibility RequirementsHigh school graduate or G.E.D. with four (4) or more years of routine operation and maintenance of dump trucks, backhoes, and related equipment, and experience in the repair of machinery and equipment including industrial‑size pumps, motors, and compressors, or equivalent combination of job‑related education and experience. Must demonstrate working knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in operation and maintenance of machinery, troubleshooting techniques, and basic mechanics and electricity.
Certificationand Licensure
Must possess a valid Michigan Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire, have a good driving record at time of appointment, and be licensed to operate job‑required equipment as mandated by State law and must maintain licensure during employment.
