Position Overview:

We are looking to hire a dedicated and observant flagger to monitor the flow of traffic around road construction sites. The flagger's responsibilities include informing motorists of possible detour routes, reporting disobedient drivers to law enforcement officials, and answering motorists' questions. You should also be able to direct emergency vehicles safely through construction zones as required. To be successful as a flagger, you should have excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team.

Ultimately, a top-notch flagger should demonstrate a sound knowledge of state traffic regulations as well as exceptional observation skills.

Responsibilities:

• Using hand signals and direction signs to direct traffic around road construction sites.
• Communicating with other flaggers using hand-held radios to direct two-way traffic onto a single lane.
• Informing the construction crew of any traffic issues that may affect their safety.
• Appropriately positioning warning and detour signs around construction sites.
• Setting up barricades and traffic cones along construction sites to cordon off certain areas.
• Removing all signs, barricades, and traffic cones upon completion of construction work.
• Assisting the construction crew in the removal of rubble, debris, and hazardous materials.
• Recording the license plate numbers of motorists who neglect to obey traffic signs and directions.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Certification through the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA).
• Proven experience working as a flagger.
• Sound knowledge of state traffic regulations.
• The ability to stand for extended periods.
• The ability to work as part of a team.
• The ability to work in harsh weather conditions.
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Exceptional observation skills and effective communication skills.
• Obeying and following all applicable traffic laws, rules, and regulations.
• Reporting any defects, accidents, or violations.
• Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, customers, and the general public at all times.
• Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Strict adherence to all Safety Practices & Procedures.
• Strict adherence to all company policies and procedures as outlined in the book of company policies.
• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
• Individuals are required to wear PPE, steel-toed footwear, safety glasses.
• The ability to pass a pre-employment screening and testing.
• Strict adherence to safety requirements, procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) policies.

Physical Demands:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to hear and speak effectively to customers or employees of organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form is required to complete tasks in an efficient and safe manner. Vision abilities required by this job include color, close, and distance vision, as well as peripheral, depth, and focus perception vision.

Work can be performed at heights, requiring the employee to climb and balance in ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways. This position requires walking, standing, sitting, bending, twisting, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and lifting. Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a work shift of at least eight hours per day, on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Must be able to carry, lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs without assistance Ability to operate equipment under extreme temperatures and for extended hours. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project needs and demands.
