Position: Accountant III (1051)

Accountant Position

Seasoned professional accountant responsible for performing advanced professional accounting work that is wide in scope and complex. Employees at this level apply advanced accounting and financial theory to develop and implement statewide accounting policies, procedures, and systems; ensure integrity, accuracy, and control of data; and control the expenditure of funds. Work at this level requires working under the guidance of statewide accounting policies and includes uniquely complex issues with many unknowns and significant risk to the state.

This individual will work within the Division of Youth Services and will be a key player in managing the division's finances, primarily focused on analyzing and updating budgets, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and meticulously tracking expenditures. This role demands a deep understanding and strict adherence to DFA guidelines for purchasing, procurement, and contracts, ensuring all financial activities comply with state regulations.

They are essential for maintaining fiscal integrity and operational efficiency, providing critical financial insights to support the division's mission.

What you'll need to be successful:

  • Demonstrated experience in grant management, including monitoring expenditures, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, preparing financial reports, and supporting audits.
  • Working knowledge of I-Connect for financial processing, documentation, or case/service management functions as applicable to agency operations.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience using the MAGIC (Mississippi Accountability System for Government Information and Collaboration) statewide accounting system, including reviewing transactions, generating reports, and ensuring compliance with state financial guidelines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, including Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis), Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and agency accounting policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, budget controls, and financial analysis.

Preferred qualifications typically require a Bachelor's Degree and 4-5 years of experience and/or appropriate certification.
