Television Broadcast Sound Technician

Job Description

Second-level professional position accountable for the preparation, research, production, and editing of more complex or sensitive programming. Incumbents at this level may determine appropriate program content, ensure programming complies with regulation and policies, communicate with multiple internal and external stakeholders, and evaluate program effectiveness. Mississippi Public Broadcasting is seeking an experienced television broadcast sound technician, to help advance the television department with high-quality production capability.

The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in television productions and be responsible for operating and maintaining audio equipment in various settings, including live events, studio recordings, and multimedia productions. They ensure high-quality sound during performances, recordings, and broadcasts by setting up, testing, and troubleshooting audio systems.

Responsibilities
  • Equipment Setup:
    Install and set up sound equipment, including microphones, audio monitors, intercom systems, RF systems, AoIP protocols, and mixing consoles. Conduct sound checks prior to events to test equipment and adjust settings. Collaborate with directors, producers, and artists to understand their audio needs and preferences.
  • Production:
    Operate mixing consoles during events and recordings in real-time to balance and enhance audio quality. Assist in recording sessions and ENG style shoots, ensuring proper microphone placement and sound levels.
  • Postproduction:
    Proficiency with sound editing software and audio processing plugins (e.g., Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Waves, iZotope). Familiar with professional audio standards for broadcast and digital media. Familiar non-linear video editing systems (e.g., Premiere, Final Cut, Avid).
  • Technical Support:
    Troubleshoot audio issues and perform repairs or adjustments as necessary. Collaborate with other technical staff to ensure seamless integration of audio with lighting and video.
  • Maintenance:
    Maintain audio equipment, performing regular inspections and cleaning. Keep inventory of audio equipment and help with managing maintenance and repairs of equipment.
What You'll Need to Be Successful

Strong knowledge of audio equipment and sound engineering principles. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 1-4 years of experience.
