After School Counselor  Summary

The Mississippi Children’s Museum is looking for energetic, outgoing individuals who want to work in a fun, educational, fast-paced environment and to facilitate superior after school experiences. This individual must provide a high profile, enthusiastic presence, engage children in proper play, and help keep museum galleries tidy and clean during rotations, including resetting after museum guests, as needed. This is a part-time position from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM most weekdays, requiring approximately 15 hours of commitment per week.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with set‑up for the day’s activities.
  • Ensures safety and supervision of a group of up to fifteen children while enforcing safety rules and ensures the museum’s practices and policies are followed as they relate to children and staff.
  • Follow a daily schedule in a positive and timely manner.
  • Monitors and participates in the activities for and with the children.
  • Works cooperatively with other adults for managing children.
  • Communicates with museum staff and guests in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Guides and encourages children with their homework and academic enrichment activities.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude and personality with all children.
  • Maintains cleanliness in museum spaces and playground.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to be a positive influence on children.
  • Experience working or volunteering directly with children in an educational or professional setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to customer service, excellence, time management, and teamwork.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, motivate children, and lead groups.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Must successfully pass fingerprinting and background checks.
Hours
  • Available for training beginning Monday, July 21, 2025.
  • Monday‑Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. most weeks following the Jackson Public Schools District schedule beginning Monday, July 28, 2025. The school calendar may dictate some specific day changes.
  • Other opportunities for other programs and departments may be available for additional hours of work.
  • One evening event a month:
  • Parent Nights – Tuesday, October 21, 2025, and Thursday, April 23, 2026
  • All Museum Staff Meetings (Thursdays) – November 20, 2025, February 26, 2026, and May 21, 2026
  • Department Meetings typically on Thursday with exception noted below:
    January 15, 2026
