Position: Asst. /Assoc. Professor of Political Science

Position Summary

Tougaloo College---a private, four-year, co-educational institution in Jackson, Mississippi---invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Political Science. In addition, the faculty member will serve as the Chair of the Department. The appointment will take effect fall 2024 semester.

Duties

The successful applicant is expected to teach a variety of courses, including Introduction to Political Science, American Government, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Research Methods, Political Theory, and Senior Seminar.

As Chair, the selected applicant will be tasked with articulating a vision and strategic plan for the department, and coordinating the execution of the department's educational programs with the faculty, scheduling courses and assigning instructors in consultation with program directors and the dean's office.

  • Monitoring and adjusting course registrations and instructor assignments.
  • Reviewing departmental programs for relevancy and enhancements.
  • Evaluating faculty and shepherding processes for faculty re-appointments and promotion and tenure.

The successful candidate serves as a central figure in communicating and addressing concerns of internal and external constituents on the departmental level.

Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Doctoral degree in Political Science and teaching experience at a community college, four-year college, or university.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Strong command in quantitative analysis.
  • Grant writing experience will be an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty and community members.

Applications should include a cover letter, current curriculum vita, copies of transcript, sample syllabus of a course taught, evidence of teaching excellence, statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of reference that address teaching ability. An official transcript is required during the interview process.
