Overview
Mississippi Public Broadcasting is seeking a Broadcast Trades Technician I for its Transmission Division to assist in the maintenance and upgrade of transmitter and microwave tower sites. The Broadcast Technician I is considered an entry‑level trainee position for a candidate interested in a career in radio frequency (RF), electronics, and broadcast technology maintenance support.
The candidate must be willing to obtain knowledge of power generation equipment and UPS back‑up power systems, HVAC systems as well as general electronics and computer networking experience. Must demonstrate a passion for a career in technology maintenance and support through a course of study or chosen hobbies.
Responsibilities- Assisting with and performing equipment upgrades; maintain the North Microwave Radio Network and broadcast transmission sites.
- Assisting with the management of power generation equipment, electrical transfer, and voltage regulation equipment; assist with generator and electrical maintenance contracts, mechanics, support personnel and fuel service vendors.
- Assisting with yard maintenance at all tower sites, assisting with contracts for fence line and guy alley brush cutting and timber clearing, maintaining road and site accessibility, fences and property security.
- Assisting with the maintenance of UPS power supplies and HVAC systems at the microwave sites and assisting at the main transmitter sites.
- Attending equipment vendor training sessions and becoming familiar with all equipment at all microwave sites and assisting with DTV/FM transmitter locations.
- Assisting with special projects at the Central Office and all remote microwave and DTV/FM transmitter sites throughout the state.
Develop the ability to work independently to assist with the maintenance of microwave and transmission tower sites. Have a willingness to travel to various sites to maintain equipment. Serve as a back‑up for other Broadcast Network Technicians. Participate in a regular on‑call roster and provide monitoring support after hours. Gain knowledge of FCC rules and regulations related to the technical operating conditions of broadcast licenses.
Demonstrate a passion for a career in broadcast technology maintenance and support and pursue further studies in an electronics or electrical engineering field. Show an interest in technology through associated hobbies in electronics, audio/video, or amateur radio. Be available after hours, during natural disasters and emergencies to provide critical repair, restoration, and recovery support. Be willing to develop practical knowledge and experience in radio frequency fundamentals, high‑voltage electrical, digital audio and video electronics;
knowledge of IT switches and wide area networks would be beneficial. Clean driving record and ability to operate heavy pickup trucks off‑road in four‑wheel drive. Competency driving box trucks up to 30 ft in length with a stick shift. Be physically capable of lifting 50 lb, climb ladders, and feel comfortable with cabling, installation skills, rack‑mount equipment, and reading assembly and wiring diagrams.
Typically requires completion of an apprenticeship program in the trade area or 4‑6 years of on‑the‑job training in the trade area. Hiring agency prefers a High School Diploma.
