Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

For a community bank, a CFO’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) center on profitability
, efficiency
, asset quality
, and liquidity
. Because community banks rely heavily on lending and local deposits, a CFO must closely track how well the bank balances risk against growth. Here are the most important KPIs to track:

Profitability and Margins
  • Net Interest Margin (NIM): The difference between the interest a bank earns on loans and the interest it pays to depositors, divided by total earning assets. This is the primary driver of a bank's core earnings.
  • Return on Assets (ROA): Net income divided by total assets. This measures how effectively the CFO is using the bank’s resources to generate profit.
  • Return on Equity (ROE): Net income divided by total shareholders’ equity. This tells investors how much profit is generated from the money they have invested.
  • Yield on Earning Assets: The average return the bank receives on its loans and investment securities
Efficiency and Expense Management
  • Efficiency Ratio: Non-interest expenses divided by total revenue. It shows how much it costs to generate a dollar of revenue. For community banks, a lower ratio means better performance.
  • Cost of Funds: The interest paid to borrow money (from depositors or other banks) divided by total liabilities.
  • Non-Interest Income to Total Revenue: The percentage of revenue coming from fees (like checking fees and wealth management) rather than interest.
