Job OverviewThe Mississippi Forestry Commission is recruiting for a Forest Ranger II, working title Forest Ranger II
- Area 45, with duties and responsibilities in Forrest, Greene, and Perry Counties, Mississippi. This is a second‑level ranger position responsible for serving on a forest fire suppression crew in an assigned area of the state. The position performs work related to forest fire prevention and suppression, maintenance of firefighting equipment, construction and maintenance of fire breaks, timber marking assistance, and general maintenance of assigned work centers.
The incumbent will assist with loading and unloading tractors and other firefighting equipment, servicing equipment and making minor repairs, using hand tools to suppress fires, plowing fire lines, and supporting timber stand improvement and other resource management practices. This position also serves as a lead worker over ranger staff and as the primary field training officer for new rangers. The incumbent may assist with information and education programs and locate assigned tracts using county road maps, dispatch directions, and other available resources.
Work is performed under the general direction of a Forester. Direct supervision may be delegated to a Forestry Technician or other designated supervisor. Additional duties include performing related or similar work as required or assigned.

Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience. Hiring agency’s preferred qualifications: experience related to forestry, fire suppression, equipment operation, resource management, or other related outdoor field work. Employees must possess, or be able to obtain, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the first year of employment. Candidates must also successfully complete a walking fitness test and a pre‑employment drug screening.
