About the Agency

The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce's (Department) mission is to support and apply necessary regulations to agricultural-related businesses within the state and to promote Mississippi's products throughout both the state and the rest of the world for the benefit of Mississippi citizens. The Department is dedicated to promoting and heightening the public's awareness of Mississippi's agricultural history, agriculture commodities and the farmers and ranchers who produce them through participation in trade shows, conferences and various other community and agricultural related organizations.

Through its various bureaus, the Department seeks to protect the health and economic welfare in conjunction with the agricultural and horticultural interests of Mississippi. These activities include registering pesticides, feeds, seeds, fertilizers, and soil amendments, as well as, permitting all pest control operators throughout the state. The Department conducts inspections of producers, grocery stores, meat establishments, fuel stations and other commercial operations to ensure adherence to applicable regulations including, without limitation, food safety and the certification of weighing and measuring devices used in commerce.

The Bureau of Regulatory Services is seeking qualified persons to fill the compliance position of Public Health Veterinarian, in the Meat Inspection Division. This is a Public Health Veterinarian position accountable for administering state and federal laws, regulations and programs throughout the state. Positions at this level are responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with state and federal agencies, commodity groups, and all facets of the agricultural industry and commercial entities regulated by the program.

Influences policy, provides insight, and develops new standards and procedures based on sound science at a national and state level. Oversees USDA, FSIS, and FDA audits, inspections, budgets, and grants management. Duties may be in areas such as food safety and sanitation; animal welfare.

The Public Health Veterinarian, is accountable for managing and coordinating a variety of programs for humane handling and slaughter of livestock and poultry animals in the state. Work involves performing inspections related to the treatment of animals, the inspection of livestock and poultry slaughter and further processing establishments to ensure compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations. Makes diagnostic and epidemiological decisions and recommendations based upon analysis and interpretation of test results.

Employees at this level may provide supervision or serve as an expert in a specific area.

Employee supervision includes training oversight; and performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Supervision at this level also requires these employees to have the knowledge and skills to perform and review the work overseen. This position is in the Meat Inspection Division of the Department. Preferred Qualifications
