About the Agency

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer and advisor for the State of Mississippi on both civil and criminal matters. Her responsibility is to represent public officials and government agencies and to issue legal opinions that interpret State law. The Attorney General has the sole power under Mississippi law to bring or defend a lawsuit on behalf of the State.

She acts as counsel to State agencies and defends them or brings suit on their behalf. Most importantly, the Office is charged with the representation of the people of the State of Mississippi.

Position Overview

** This is a time-limited (NS-14) position in the Attorney General's office in Hinds County**

Responsibilities
  • Establishes and updates the database to track receipt of cases, upcoming deadlines, and other case information; keeps attorneys and appropriate staff members informed of the status of cases.
  • Maintains case files and case-related material.
  • Receives served subpoenas and summons and takes necessary measures to notify the proper client agency of service.
  • Performs document reviews and assists in discovery: reviews case files, transcripts, and other documents; prepares summaries; identifies critical documents; and suggests individuals and entities as appropriate subjects of additional discovery measures.
  • Drafts subpoenas and related documents and ensures proper delivery of such; tracks recipients’ compliance with subpoenas and follows up to ensure compliance.
  • Prepares a variety of repetitive or routine documents for attorney review and approval prior to filing/issuance.
  • Composes original correspondence that does not require legal interpretations but does require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology; examples may include transmittal of pleadings, requests for extensions of time, notices, and status updates to witnesses.
  • Ensures documents are completed promptly and presented for signature in the proper format; carefully proofreads documents before submission to the approving official.
  • Uses a variety of automated legal research tools, including public information databases, to research and obtain relevant case/matter-related information.
  • Maintains multiple calendars as directed, assembles exhibits, schedules witnesses, and conferences; answers outside inquiries not requiring legal interpretations and refers other questions to appropriate office members.
  • Monitors the progress of pending cases and initiates action to ensure that established deadlines are met; maintains case-tracking database.
  • Exercises judgment and discretion in determining information provided to telephonic inquiries and visitors.
  • Provides aid that is dependable and effective in dealings with courts, clients, and co-workers (including supervisors and support staff).
  • Performs assigned tasks with appropriate oversight, including special projects and assignments.
  • Performs tasks requiring interaction, oral and written, with courts, clients, co-workers, and others in a diplomatic, cooperative, considerate, courteous, professional, and timely manner.
  • Prepares well-written work product using a variety of computer software programs and applications, including word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Completes high-quality work under pressure and competing deadlines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
What You'll Need to Be Successful

Excellent organizational, communication, and data processing skills, able to prioritize work to meet assigned deadlines, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 5+ years of experience in a legal environment and may also require a paralegal certification.
