Position Overview
The Ingalls Ship fitter is the truest picture of a Shipbuilding Craftsman. They are the artisans who cut, grind, bend and fit together the raw steel to create the shape of our battle tested ships. Job DescriptionAn Ingalls Ship fitter, also referred to as a Journeyman Ship fitter or a Boilermaker, is responsible for the use of various tools and equipment in the fabrication, assembling and erection of metal components at the various stages in constructing a marine vessel. The work may involve working at different heights, confined spaces, and various weather conditions across multiple shifts 24/7. Safety procedures meet or exceed industry standards.
Responsibilities- Cut, grind, bend, frame, and fit construction steel in accordance with ship plans.
- Read and interpret blueprints using metric and standard measurements.
- Use trade-specific tools such as grinder, hand torch, hydraulic and ratchet jack, chain fall/come-a-long, combination square, framing square, hand level, and plumb bob.
- Coordinate fit‑up and fabrication of steel plate and beams.
- Follow safety procedures and work in confined or hazardous environments when required.
- Minimum 2 years of trade experience.
- Basic math, reading, and comprehension skills.
- Experience with shipbuilding or fabrication trade tools.
- Knowledge of sheet metal layout, fit‑up, and steel plate fabrication.
- Ability to work shifts as needed and at heights or confined spaces.
- Knowledge of setting and erecting units, datum lines, and fit‑up alignment tolerances.
- Advanced blueprint reading skills.
- 3-5 years of marine, shipbuilding, or construction experience.
- Tech Master Certification or high school graduate or equivalent.
