Job Title
RN Neurosurgery Coordinator – Neurosurgery
Job SummaryTo manage and coordinate the care of neurosurgical patients. These patients are very complex and need a case manager experienced in navigating the healthcare systems to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate care and follow‑up. Patients are typically surgical, but can also be medical.
Education & ExperienceFive (5) years of case management, care coordination, or general RN experience; or three (3) years in Neuroscience/ICU. Outpatient management experience preferred.
Certifications, Licenses & RegistrationValid RN license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Critical thinking, time management and organizational skill are essential.
- Ability to work and thrive as a key part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, with strong presentation and decision‑making skills.
- Knowledge of healthcare industry trends, medical procedures, patient assessment, and regulatory requirements.
- Written and oral communication is essential, with the ability to present education materials to many types of audiences.
- Attention to detail, effective communication and documentation with numerous physicians, operating room staff, intensive care unit (ICU), emergency department (ED), radiology, pathology, oncology, and anesthesiology staff, insurance companies, other health facilities, patients, and families.
- Provide daily clinical assessment of neurosurgical patients throughout all phases of care.
- Assess patient status and general health, and collaboratively determine need for additional assessment or intervention.
- Facilitate the scheduling of studies or procedures for diagnostic purposes while exercising fiscal responsibility for patient and hospital costs.
- Participate in the development and implementation of protocol and standards of care for neurosurgical patients, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
- Assist nurses and other staff to access, plan, implement and evaluate the care of neurosurgical patients.
- Monitor the process and outcomes of routine care to determine quality outcomes and performance improvement processes.
- Coordinate activities prior to treatments and clinical interactions as medical triage for outpatients in collaboration with the physician/provider on‑call.
- Coordinate patient processes including communication between physicians, patients/families and medical teams.
- Review patient's medical care, including lab and procedural results, accurate maintenance of medication reconciliation, and assessment of patient issues and triage care with providers.
- Communicate in a timely manner with the multidisciplinary team and patients/families regarding all care issues.
- Collaborate effectively with all multidisciplinary team members and all care teams/disciplines involved with care of the patient.
- Maintain patient medical record with current data to facilitate communication.
- Plan nursing care and medical procedures with fiscal responsibility by working collaboratively with administrators, financial coordinators, health system utilization review and third‑party case managers.
- Educate neurosurgery patients, their families and caregivers throughout the continuum of care.
- Develop patient education materials or identify external resources appropriate for patient education in all phases of treatment and care.
- Educate nurses and other multidisciplinary care team members about patient care issues to promote positive outcomes for neurosurgical patients.
- Participate or lead team conferences, rounds or meetings related to care of the neurosurgical patient or program issues.
- Interpret research and published data to nursing staff and colleagues concerning current issues in healthcare.
- Incorporate research related to the care of neurosurgical patients into evidence‑based practice in collaboration with the medical team.
- Identify areas for study and participate in and/or design and conduct research.
- Serve as a consultant to nurses and other health care professionals regarding the care of the neurosurgical patient.
- Advise referring physicians/nurses in collaboration with the surgical and medical teams.
