Nurse graduates that are board eligible from an accredited school of nursing may work under the direct supervision of an RN. After being deemed competent, the nurse graduate will provide direct and indirect patient care which has been mastered through orientation to the unit and is outlined per UMMC job description. This care is delegated by the RN and delivered in a safe, therapeutic manner contributing effectively and efficiently to the operation of the inpatient/outpatient unit until a Mississippi Board of Nursing license is obtained.
Education& Experience
Associate's degree or higher in Nursing/Diploma.
Certifications, Licenses or Registration RequiredAll nurse graduates employed by University Hospitals and Health System must obtain a valid nursing license within 120 days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of clinical nursing care procedures and protocols.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of computer systems, tools, and programs.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Record vital signs, intake, outputs, pulse oximetry and weights accurately and report changes to RN.
- Assist and prepare patients for treatment, exams, and procedures as directed by RN.
- Administer and perform baths and basic hygiene measures as directed by RN.
- Assist with collection and delivery of specimens to appropriate labs in a timely manner.
- Weigh, lift, turn, and reposition patients utilizing good body mechanics.
- Submit proper patient charges for supplies/equipment in a cost‑effective manner and report equipment in need of repair to the nurse manager or charge nurse.
- Assist in serving dietary trays and feeding patients as needed.
- Provide and document care based upon patient expectations, age, and development level.
- Adhere to UMMC’s infection control policy.
- Attend and participate in continuing education/in‑service programs.
Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environments such as high noise levels, exposure to heat and cold, handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, and exposure to biohazardous conditions including radiation, blood‑borne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Activities may include occasional working hours beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travel to off‑site locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant standing and walking, frequent bending, lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, and other physically demanding tasks as described above.
