Description:
The medical surgical unit has a typical nurse to patient ratio of 1:5 to 1:6, which may be adjusted for higher acuity patients.
Common patient diagnoses include general medical surgical conditions, congestive heart failure, diabetes, post-surgical care, trauma, acute kidney injury, sickle cell anemia, gastroparesis, and respiratory illnesses.
Registered Nurses may be required to titrate drips, including heparin and potentially amiodarone prior to patient transfer to a cardiac unit.
All patients are monitored on the unit, with access to a central monitor station that communicates with the nursing staff.
Charge nurses may take a light patient assignment but will take a full load of patients if necessary.
All staff are expected to float between units based on skillset, with higher acuity patients given to core staff.
The shifts are 12 hours long, either 7 am to 7 pm or 7 pm to 7 am, with some accommodations for block scheduling as needed.
Weekend requirements typically involve every other or two weekends per month.
Holiday requirements are rotated among the regular staff.
There are no call or standby requirements associated with this position.
The dress code mandates solid colors in scrubs that are professional in appearance.
Initial orientation includes paperwork, logins for systems, and a unit walkthrough.
Charting is conducted using a designated electronic health record system.
