Environmental Compliance Specialist / Environmental Scientist
Locations:
Nashville (Brentwood), TN;
Birmingham, AL;
Jackson (Gluckstadt), MS; or other Southeast Region offices.
- Perform Phase 1 environmental site assessments and environmental inspections including stormwater, SPCC, and hazardous waste.
- Provide environmental compliance program support for industrial clients, including developing procedures and permits and preparing and submitting regulatory reports.
- Prepare written and verbal technical reports, including documentation of audits and field investigations, regulatory research, evaluation of findings, data management and interpretation, and development of graphical and tabular presentation of data.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures, including but not limited to the maintenance of sample collection, laboratory documentation, written procedures, monitoring systems, and logbooks.
- Work with cross‑functional teams in executing project work.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Assist in managing and developing client relationships.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, Engineering, Earth Science or related discipline.
- Willingness to work on a variety of projects and eagerness to develop new skills.
- Ability to pass an OSHA HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a respirator.
- Potential assignments may involve work on sites requiring cleanup or disposal of hazardous materials; participation in an OSHA medical surveillance program may be required.
- Valid US driver’s license.
- Ability to work in locations with rough terrain and in conditions typical of industrial facilities.
- Occasional overnight travel within the region may be required; expect an average workload of 50% office and 50% client sites.
- Self‑sufficient, self‑motivated, and ability to work under pressure of deadlines.
- Interest and proficiency in investigative work with attention to detail.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills when interacting with others and presenting ideas to scientific and non‑scientific audiences.
- Self‑leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and comply with company policies.
- Moderate proficiency with business writing, office automation, communication software, technology, and tools.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify effective means to accomplish project objectives.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Capacity to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
- 3+ years of manufacturing experience in an environmental compliance role and working knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Experience conducting Phase I environmental site assessments following ASTM International Standard E 1527‑13.
- Experience conducting environmental due diligence assessments of roadway and other transportation corridors.
