Job DescriptionHinds Community College Physical Plant Operations:
Maintenance Technician responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems in college facilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEHigh School Diploma or GED – Minimum baseline for entry into the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Install plumbing systems by reading blueprints, drawing layouts, and installing pipes, assemblies, and fittings.
- Diagnose and resolve leaks, clogs, or broken pipes; replace or repair steam, water, or gas systems and related equipment such as water heaters and pumps.
- Test systems using pressure gauges and other tools to detect leaks; ensure systems meet safety and quality standards.
- Ensure all work complies with local plumbing codes and safety regulations.
- Provide cost estimates and explain repairs to clients while maintaining a professional demeanor on‑site.
Skills & Qualifications
- Technical knowledge of water distribution, drainage, and venting systems; proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Physical stamina to work in confined spaces, lift heavy materials, and stand or kneel for extended periods.
- Problem‑solving skills to identify the root cause of complex plumbing failures quickly.
- Certification requirements: high school diploma or GED, completion of formal apprenticeship or vocational training;
State Journeyman or Master Plumber license often required for senior roles.
- First‑time fix rate – removing the issue on the initial visit.
- Code compliance – zero violations during inspections.
- Safety record – maintaining a workspace free of accidents or hazardous leaks.
- Response time – meeting deadlines for emergency repairs or scheduled installations.
Unclog high‑pressure sewer lines using hydro‑jetting equipment; install and certify backflow prevention devices; solder copper piping or join PEX and PVC lines; repair or replace commercial‑grade water heaters and boilers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSFrequent use of hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. Often required to stand, walk, sit, taste and smell; often sit. Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities: close vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENTNoise level is usually moderate; occasionally required to perform job responsibilities outdoors or off‑site.
